GLASGOW, Ky. (KT) – For Crossroads Life Center, being pro-life means serving families and educating parents in Barren County.

“We promote and defend life,” said Teresa Purichia, executive director of Crossroads. “And we do that by equipping women and men to make healthy, confident family choices.”

Crossroads serves pregnant women and families with children aged 5 and younger.

“I grew up close to my parents and when I had children, I could call my mom. But it seems like now families are distant or they don’t live close to each other,” Purichia added. “They really don’t have anyone to call or fall back on, so we try to instill in them those great values of family and how to be a great parent.”

Crossroads offers self-administered pregnancy tests, one-on-one mentoring, parenting classes, and material assistance with baby essentials like diapers, wipes and formula — all free to their clients. The “Earn While You Learn” program is another popular service where parents can attend classes and earn “mommy bucks” that they can use in the Crossroads baby boutique to shop for their children or families.

“We also offer court-appointed classes for those whose children have been removed from the home, and they’re working toward returning them,” Purichia explained. “We work hand-in-hand with case workers, and those case workers actually choose the classes that they think will best benefit their client.”

Class content ranges from anger management and the effects of alcohol and drug abuse, to co-parenting, potty training, and how to handle tantrums.

Karisa Peterson, a Crossroads board member, added that these resources are meeting a great need in Glasgow and surrounding counties.

“Many people do not know how to foster a healthy, functional family of their own because they have never been a part of one,” Peterson said. “The team at Crossroads comes alongside men and women, often during crisis situations, and guides them through creating and becom(ing) a healthy, functioning family — all while assisting with material needs and sharing the gospel of Christ.”

To accomplish their ministry and mission, Crossroads relies on the faithful volunteers who serve as mentors, teach cooking classes, organize donations, fold newsletters, and watch the children of clients while their parents are attending classes. And local churches also play an essential role.

“We are supported by the generous, sacrificial gifts of those who give individually and our churches,” Purichia said. “We can’t do what we do without them — and they are very supportive.”

The faithful service of churches, Crossroads staff, and volunteers ensures that the good news of the gospel is preached daily. As a result, over 24 clients have professed faith in Christ in the past two years.

“All I can say is that it’s all God; it’s none of us,” said Purichia. “We feel this is a place he allows us to come and do ministry. We get to be his hands and feet. And we have seen him do extraordinary things through this ministry, from salvation to lives changed to people having a hand-up instead of a handout to (people) feeling value and worth.”

“Crossroads is a ministry that God placed in Glasgow to fulfill His purposes,” Peterson added. “He reminds us of that with every salvation and every reunited family.”
