Ground has been broken at the site that will soon be the new home for the Fortuna Senior Center. The 7,700 square foot, one-story building will be located at the intersection of Gulliksen Drive and Rohnerville Road.
With shovels in hand on June 29, Fortuna Senior Center volunteers and supporters officially kicked off the construction project. DCI Builders has been selected as the contractor, and engineering for the project was completed by Whitchurch Engineering.
“We are so excited about this project and about this new location,” Fortuna Senior Center President Marsha Hays said. “We want this to be a place where people can come and hang out and visit, rather than be home alone.” She said there will be classes and programs that will encourage people to come and learn something or do something.
Fundraising efforts are currently underway and, at the groundbreaking ceremony, a donation of $1,000 was made by Joy Boehm of Joy’s Rustic Garden and Labyrinth Walk in Fortuna.
Hays said over the years the Fortuna Senior Center has received endowments with the intention that they be used as some point for having its own building.
“We have been safeguarding those funds while waiting for the right opportunity,” Hays said, “and now is the time to complete that vision for our senior community.”
She said the new location and structure will provide a permanent home that is created with seniors’ needs at the forefront of the building plan.
“This is not only a project for the senior center, but a project for the community, now and for years to come,” Hays said. She said it will provide a safe, comfortable, and friendly place to gather for social and recreational opportunities.
An added benefit of the new location is a Redwood Transit System bus stop on Rohnerville Road right in front of where the new building will be erected.
The first step will be laying a foundation for the new pre-fab building, which is expected to be delivered by mid to late August. The anticipated opening at the new location of the Fortuna Senior Center is spring 2022. When opened, the plan is to have two “sessions” for seniors, one from 9 a.m. to noon and another from noon to 4 p.m.
Since 2020, the Fortuna Senior Center has been located on the McLean Campus, in the Gene Lucas Community Center building. After realizing that the space there was not as “senior-friendly” as had been hoped, the organization began looking at other options.
“We are thankful for where we were,” Hays said, “but we also learned what we don’t want (in our senior center). We want some place that is just for us.”
