USMNT center back Aaron Long reported likely out until 2022 with ruptured achilles - Stars and Stripes FC

Aaron Long has been a mainstay with the USMNT since breaking through with the NY Red Bulls in 2017. In that time he also won MLS Defender of the Year in 2018 and has been linked to several Premier League clubs, but moves abroad were not finalized for the center back.

Long seemed to be on track for a callup to either the Nations League or Gold Cup this summer for the USMNT, but those plans will be shelved. Over the weekend, Long sustained an injury against the Philadelphia Union in the Red Bulls 1-0 loss in Chester. Reports were that it was serious and today Kristian Dyer confirmed that Long ruptured his achilles and will be likely out until next year.

The USMNT is fairly deep at center back, but Long had logged a lot of minutes under manager Gregg Berhalter. His experience in Berhalter’s system will be difficult to replace, but with the World Cup pushed back to the fall of 2022 may still be able to regain his spot on the USMNT by the time the tournament rolls around.
