Mark Madden's Hot Take: Where Aaron Rodgers plays could impact Steelers' playoff fate - TribLIVE

The NFL’s big schedule “reveal” this past Wednesday gave clichéd sports media a chance to break down the Steelers’ slate game-by-game in detailed fashion.

That approach ignores that A) We knew who the Steelers were playing (and where) months ago, and B) The season is still three months away.

But the “reveal” did provide Steelers fans a chance to talk about where Aaron Rodgers will play. (There’s no shortage when it comes to that debate. It’s all that’s seen/heard on just about every sports show on radio and TV. Discussing it must be a law, or a commandment.)

The Steelers play at Green Bay Week 4. They host Denver Week 5.

Conventional wisdom holds that Rodgers will stay with the former or move to the latter.

Denver was 5-11 last year. The Broncos have OK weaponry like wideout Jerry Jeudy and running back Melvin Gordon, but nothing overwhelming. Rodgers gets them to .500, but no better.

If Rodgers leaves Green Bay, the Packers collapse. Second-year quarterback Jordan Love isn’t ready to play. Recent signing Blake Bortles is, well, Blake Bortles. (But, since 2017, Bortles and Rodgers have each won two playoff games. Bortles eliminated the Steelers in ’17.)

If Rodgers stays with Green Bay, the Steelers lose there but beat Denver.

If Rodgers goes to Denver, the Steelers could win both games.

If you think the Steelers are walking a fine line when it comes to making the playoffs, Rodgers’ fate impacts them a great deal.

But most people don’t think that, especially outside of Pittsburgh.

Mike Greenberg of ESPN said that if it wasn’t for coach Mike Tomlin’s credibility, he’d consider the Steelers “one of the worst teams in the NFL.” He’s not alone.

The most troubling part of the Steelers’ schedule is their final four games: Tennessee, at Kansas City, Cleveland, at Baltimore.

It’s almost as if the NFL is scripting the Steelers for a fourth straight late-season collapse.

As Brooke Pryor wrote at ESPN.com: “The Steelers will go 0-4 to end the season and miss the playoffs in 2021.” She called the Steelers’ final four opponents potential “juggernauts.”

Perhaps the Steelers will disappoint the critics. As opposed to disappointing themselves and Pittsburgh, which they’ve done for a decade.
