Deportivo Saprissa 2, Montreal Impact 2 | 2020 Concacaf Champions League Match Recap - MLSsoccer.com

Orji Okwonkwo goal celebration - SAP-MTL CCL

The Montreal Impact struck twice in the first 22 minutes, but conceded a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to settle for a 2-2 draw against host Deportivo Saprissa in the opening leg of the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 Wednesday night in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The Impact take those away goals with them back to Stade Olympique for the second leg Feb. 27, but Saprissa will feel confident goals can be had after a dominant final 30 minutes.

Romell Quioto picked off an errant pass out of the back by former Columbus Crew SC and Portland Timbers midfielder David Guzman and slipped a pass to Bojan. His shot from the edge of the 18-yard box was blocked, but the rebound fell to Orji Okwonkwo, who made no mistake by slipping his shot inside the far post to open the scoring in the 12th minute.

Saprissa had shouts for a penalty kick moments later when Rod Fanni went to ground to win the ball in the box before Manfred Ugalde fell over the center back.

Quioto doubled the lead 10 minutes later on a quick counterattack. Bojan turned and sprayed played a brilliant diagonal ball to the Honduran international, who took a settling touch with his left and then fired a near-post bullet past Aaron Cruz.

Maxi Urruti had a golazo taken off the board in the 57th minute for a foul called on Quioto.

But then Saprissa turned up the heat. Johan Venegas pulled Saprissa back a goal in the 80th minute, latching onto an Ariel Rodriguez cross and scoring against his former team and Rodriguez leveled at the death to send the Monsters Cave into hysterics.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Is the glass half empty or half full? The away goals are important, but what could have been a massive advantage was erased in a 10-minute span late by a Saprissa team that deserved that, and maybe more. The Impact will limp into the second leg after Henry was forced to make two changes inside the opening 30 minutes because of injuries to Rudy Camacho and Okwonkwo and had to replace Quioto also because of an apparent injury in the final 20 minutes.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: If the Impact go through to the quarterfinals, Quioto’s first goal for Montreal could be a big factor.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: On his Montreal debut, Quioto was a force on the left wing. The Honduran helped set up the first goal and scored the all-important second away goal before leaving the match late due to injury.
