Three suspects attempted to rob a man who was servicing an ATM near the Academic Center Wednesday, according to a Metropolitan Police Department report.
The victim of the attempted robbery had just finished servicing the ATM inside the lobby of Rome Hall and was returning to his armored vehicle when an armed suspect ran up to him, demanding he give up a bag of cash containing $150 to $180, according to the report. The report states the victim dropped the bag on the ground and placed his hand on his service pistol, but the suspect and an accomplice fled to a getaway vehicle instead of grabbing the bag.
The armed suspect yelled “Get the bag, bro!” to his accomplice before they ran to a black Honda Accord, driving away east on I Street without the bag of cash and with a third suspect behind the wheel, according to the report. The report states the two suspects who were outside of the car attempted retrieving the bag but were unsuccessful.
An MPD spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.
The report states the incident occurred between 1 and 1:16 p.m., and officials issued a GW Alert to the GW community about an hour later at 2:13 p.m. The alert states that one suspect wore a red sweatshirt, blue jeans and surgical mask, and the other was dressed in black clothing and a ski mask.
A second alert sent 14 minutes later stated there was no longer a threat to campus.
“Armed Robbery 2100 block of Eye St. Avoid Area (north of Academic Center No further threat to campus,” the alert reads.
GW Police Department Chief James Tate said GWPD officers responded to the attempted robbery after information about the incident was transmitted over MPD dispatch radio. He said GWPD officers will assist MPD in its investigation of the attempted robbery “as best as possible.”
