In a time of social distancing, racial unrest and political tension, members of the Community Folk Art Center say, they wanted to provide the community with a space to come together in solidarity, while getting their hands dirty.

The Community Folk Art Center held a paint party to honor Black Lives Matter.

What You Need To Know

  • The Community Folk Art Center hosted a Black Lives Matter Paint Party

  • They say as the community deals with a pandemic, racial unrest, and political tension, they wanted to create a space of unity

  • The proceeds will go to the continuation of an art course for the community.

In addition to painting canvases, the group partnered with 100 Black Men to provide information about voting and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organizers of both groups say in the midst of a pandemic, racial unrest, and —what they say— is one of the most important elections, community members need space to use art as therapy and in solidarity.

“Art really provides a creative outlet for us to express our most human expressions needs, you’ll find that throughout this pandemic. That its been the arts that allowed people to connect to stay connected,” said Tanisha Jackson, executive director of the Community Folk Art Center.

Participants chose from Black Lives Matter canvases templates and made them their own.

Artists say while people mostly associate “Black Lives Matter” with protests and social media posts, events like these also represent the meaning of the movement.

“Our lives matter when we come together as a community and support one another and celebrate Black Art and celebrate Black music. It’s us supporting one another through our struggles,” said Jerry Jean-Louis.

The proceeds from the event will help the Community Folk Art Center continue to provide online art classes.
