Amazon’s new 640,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Beaumont began churning out packages Wednesday.

The facility employs more than 1,000 full-time workers so far, and the e-commerce giant is looking to hire more employees to help pick, pack and ship books, electronics, school supplies and home goods.

Amazon’s already has a massive presence in the Inland Empire, including nine fulfillment centers, three cross dock locations, two sort centers and one Amazon Air facility. Those operations employ more than 20,000, company officials said.

City Manager Todd Parton said the center’s opening solidifies Beaumont as “a pivotal location” for international trade and commerce.

“We look forward to the multitude of employment opportunities the fulfillment center brings to the area and all that means for Beaumont’s families,” Parton said.

Amazon, which faced scrutiny early in the pandemic for its lack of safety protocols, invested more than $4 billion from April to June on COVID-19 safety measures related to masks, hand sanitizer, thermal cameras, sanitizing wipes, gloves and disinfectant spraying in buildings, among other safeguards.

The Seattle-based company is also looking to hire 33,000 workers for corporate and tech roles in the coming months.

Amazon will hold an online career fair Sept. 16 to collect resumes and give people a chance to talk to a recruiter.

An economic boost for California

Amazon says it has created more than 91,000 jobs in California since 2010 and has invested more than $50 billion across the state, including infrastructure and compensation to employees.

Amazon says more than 240,000 independent authors and small and medium businesses in California are selling to customers in Amazon’s store, helping support additional jobs across the state.

Applicants interested in work at the Beaumont facility can go to amazon.com/IEjobs or text COACHELLANOW to 77088 for more information. Wages for all workers start at a minimum of $15 an hour and employees receive full medical, vision and dental insurance as well as a 401(k) plan with a 50% match.

Workers additionally receive up to 20 weeks of maternal and parental paid leave, as well as access to a Leave Share and Ramp Back program, which gives new parents flexibility.
