Live Coverage: Tracking the Impact of the Coronavirus on the U.S. - The New York Times

As work schedules are disrupted by public health mandates and people face the unforeseen costs of food and supplies, some public figures are helping ease the financial burden of their online followers.

They are asking their social media followers to share their Venmo, PayPal and Cash App details so they can make donations to their accounts. Among those who have offered to make donations are the rapper Lil Nas X and the writer Shea Serrano, who often uses Twitter to raise money for charity. Many of their followers are following suit and donating what they can to those seeking help.

After Samuel Themer, a full-time drag queen who performs under the name Gilda Wabbit, responded to a tweet from Fran Tirado, who leads L.G.B.T.Q.+ content strategy at Netflix, they said they received enough money to afford a cab ride home after a recent show they performed in New York. Mr. Tirado’s tweet incited a crowdfunding effort for queer and transgender people working in freelance and gig-economy jobs.

“A cab when I’m in drag at 2:30 a.m. is so much safer than the subway,” Mx. Themer, 27, said. “The fact that strangers around the country tipped me, even though it seems small, that compassion and kindness is really important.”

After the first case of the new coronavirus was confirmed in New Jersey, Giovanni Arriaga, who is 29 and lives in Passaic, N.J., spent close to $300 on supplies like canned goods, pasta and rice for his household; he lives with his parents, his brother, his brother’s wife and their 2-year-old child.

“We were just trying to be as prepared as possible, whatever we could get our hands on that we would still use regularly even if the worst didn’t happen,” Mr. Arriaga said. “But then there were the unexpected things I had to pay, like the electricity bill.”

Mr. Arriaga received about $200 from Mr. Serrano after he requested help paying off his energy bill. “I saw the Venmo come through and it felt like a weight is off your shoulder,” he said. “I was worried about paying the bill late, and this just made today and the stress of corona going around a little bit easier.”

Mr. Serrano said he posted the call for donations after watching the internet descend into panic. “I wanted to not feel that way for an hour or two,” he said.
