Typically the biggest threat of a winter storm is to travel, and with this system it's easier to forecast that driving conditions will be poor than the exact snow totals.
As of Friday evening, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Eau Claire, Pepin, Clark, Buffalo, Trempealeau, and Jackson counties from 6 AM to 6 PM on Sunday.
We will have slippery roads and low visibility on Sunday, with periods of moderate snow rates and a chance for a few bursts of heavy snow.
Until then, we'll be fairly quiet with just a few chances for flurries and a few peaks of sunshine through Saturday.
Timing: Back to Sunday's snow, expect the system to move in early in the morning and the highest rates mid morning through midday. Light snow will continue through the afternoon before it all comes to an end in the evening.
Amounts: Expect a sharp dropoff in snow amounts across Western Wisconsin, with 5 to 10 inches closer to La Crosse falling to just 2 to 7 inches near Eau Claire. Further to the north, just 1 to 4 inches is expected. These ranges were left intentionally wide due to the likelihood of the forecast shifting around a bit. We should have a better idea on what to expect by Saturday evening.
Wind/visibility: Winds won't be very strong, but the larger snow flakes and decent snow rates will contribute to the low visibility, so make sure your lights are on even if you drive a car with automatic headlights. It's likely they won't turn on, so you'll need to manually override them.
Beyond this system: Monday will be mostly sunny but colder with temperatures going up just a bit Tuesday and Wednesday. An arctic cold front moves through late Wednesday, bringing a slight chance for light snow along with much colder air to end the week despite a return to sunshine.
