Midweek winter storm expected to be short but high-impact - Grand Forks Herald

The National Weather Service is still monitoring a winter storm that could bring blizzard conditions to the Red River Valley Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, but an updated situation report says the blizzard may only last about three to six hours.

Although the storm is expected to be short, NWS warns it could be high-impact. A Winter Storm Watch for the Grand Forks region remains in effect through 3 p.m. Feb. 12.

According to a winter weather briefing by NWS on Tuesday morning, Tuesday is expected to see pleasant weather, but the first cold blast is expected to arrive late tonight.

The system is expected to arrive sooner than initially expected and will bring higher winds than first predicted. Strong winds are expected to arrive in the Devils Lake region between midnight tonight and 3 a.m. Wednesday, and will move south, arriving in the Wahpeton area between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Impacted areas – which as of Tuesday morning are expected to mostly be the Devils Lake region into the Red River Valley – are expected to receive 1 to 2 inches of snow, wind gusts as high as 50 mph and wind chills as low as 40 below zero.

The National Weather Service indicates it has high confidence in light snow totals, high winds and very cold wind chills. The intensity and duration of the potential blizzard impacts remain more up in the air as the NWS continues to monitor the storm.
