San Francisco will temporarily pause inoculating residents at the Moscone Center and City College of San Francisco beginning Monday, with plans to reopen with the next COVID-19 vaccine resupply from the federal government, officials announced Sunday.
“I’m frustrated because we’ve shown that SF can administer shots as soon as they come in,” Mayor London Breed said in a tweet. “CCSF has been running well for weeks. The reports from Moscone are overwhelmingly positive. The only thing holding us back is a lack of supply.”
Moscone will be closed for a week.
Officials say City College will likely reopen Friday for second doses. A third high-volume site in San Francisco will also open this week as planned, but with fewer available appointments.
No existing appointments, which are made on the state’s MyTurn scheduling system, have been canceled.
When the Moscone Center opened early this month as a high-volume vaccination site, officials spoke hopefully of getting all city residents vaccinated by the end of June — if enough supply arrived. But despite having the capabilities to administer more than 10,000 vaccines daily, supply has remained inconsistent.
As of Feb. 13, the city has received 262,000 doses and administered more than 190,000 — the remaining doses are reserved for scheduled first and second appointments.
Over the last week, the city administered an average of 7,400 doses. About half of city residents older than 65 have been vaccinated. This still leaves a huge gap — the city must vaccine all 760,000 residents older than 16, meaning a total of more than 1.5 million doses are need.
