Tropical Storm Sally could impact Alabama with rain, flooding - Montgomery Advertiser

Coastal Alabama is under tropical storm, hurricane and storm surge watched due to Tropical Storm Sally. The storm Sunday is moving through the Gulf, with hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall expected Monday night.

Centered off the southwest coast of Florida on Sunday afternoon, a storm surge is in effect for the southern Alabama border, with winds expected to reach between 40 and 70 mph once the storm hits land. Forecasts predict Sally will hit land near New Orleans and eventually travel northeast, eventually through Alabama.

This will likely be a prolonged event, according to the National Weather Service, with heavy rainfall and dangerous surf.

What kind of effect will Sally have inland and on coastal Alabama?

Montgomery faces a 40% chance of thunderstorms Monday evening, with likely showers through Thursday.

Jack Cullen, a senior forecaster with the Mobile/Pensacola National Weather Service office, said the biggest impact to Alabama will be the heavy rainfall, with 15 or more inches of rain expected in the southern and coastal portions of the state. Central Alabama is expected to get 5 to 10 inches, with the north looking at 2 to 4. Because of this, Alabama faces potential flooding.

"As we head into a new week, we are keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Sally. It is likely that this storm system will be impacting Alabama’s Gulf Coast. While it is currently not being predicted as a direct hit to our coastal areas, we know well that we should not take the threat lightly," a release from Gov. Kay Ivey stated.

"I urge everyone to stay tuned in to your local, trusted weather news source and to remain aware as this storm approaches. While COVID-19 remains a threat, do what you can to protect your health, but if necessary, remember that getting yourself and your family to safety in the event of severe weather takes precedent. We will continue monitoring everything from the state level. Stay vigilant, Alabama."

Tropical Storm Sally is the earliest "S" storm on record, beating out Stan which formed in October 2005. There are just three more storm names left for the 2020 season — Teddy, Vicky and Wilfred — before the Greek alphabet will be used.

The risk for significant storm surge is expected.
