A brush fire burning on Camp Pendleton was sending smoke over North County Saturday, base and fire officials said.
As of 5 p.m., the fire had charred about 220 acres, according to a statement from base officials. The blaze was burning in the X-ray impact area, located northeast of and significantly inland from the base’s main southern entrance.
The Camp Pendleton Fire Department was expected to continue working to contain the fire for the remainder of the day, but NorthComm Fire, the agency responsible for coordinating fire response efforts throughout North County, said in its own statement that the fire appeared to be fully contained within the impact area. Such locations are generally used for artillery and mortar training on the base.
