WASHINGTON D.C. — Most Americans believe that warmer weather and the Spring months will end the flu season, but according to CBS News, many Americans are wondering if the Spring months will serve to blunt the coronavirus outbreak.
Dr. Gregory Gray who is with Duke University’s Global Health Institute Division of Infectious Diseases, told CBS News that the summer months may lead to a small decrease in the spread of the virus, but it likely won’t stop the spread.

Gray said, “It is hard to know. Routinely seen coronaviruses often wane during summer months as buildings have more air circulation, tend to congregate less and people are more exposed to UV light which can kill viruses.”
It’s important to remember that just because it’s getting warmer doesn’t mean it’s warm elsewhere in the country or the world.
“The virus will soon be very active in both the southern and northern hemispheres, which have opposing summers and winters,” Gray said. “Hence a summer slowdown in the northern hemisphere may be offset with a concomitant winter increase in the southern hemisphere.

According to the CDC’s website, it’s not known know if weather and temperature impact the spread of coronavirus. The website also says that even though it’s less likely that people will get a cold or the flue during the summer, it’s possible that people can get viruses at any time of the year.
The CDC says, “Some other viruses, like the common cold and flu, spread more during the cold weather months but that does not mean it is impossible to become sick with these viruses during the other months.” "At this time, it is not known whether the spread of COVID-19 will decrease when weather becomes warmer. There is much more to learn about the transmissibility, severity, and other features associated with COVID-19 and investigations are ongoing."
